Sittingbourne (@3.3) vs VCD Athletic (@1.8)

Our Prediction:

VCD Athletic will win

Sittingbourne – VCD Athletic Match Prediction | 25-09-2019 14:45

Dom Di Paolas side have four more games remaining in which to pick up those final three points, in what should surely be enough to ensure The Hornets finish in the top five this season, but while VCD Athletic could mathematically end up with a maximum 65 points, Horshams superior goal difference would need to see a dramatic intervention by the footballing Gods to see DDPs side miss out.

Having enjoyed back-to-back victories over Guernsey (4-0) and Hastings United (2-0) to take their league wins to a round dozen, the same as ourselves, the Brickies came back down to earth with a bump when they were beaten 3-1 at VCD Athletic last weekend a match in which both sides ended with ten men. That reverse extended their losing away run to seven matches a quite remarkable statistic given that they lost just one of their first ten on the road in all competitions so it is as well for them, and perhaps bad news for Dom di Paola this weekend, that their home record stands up to scrutiny with only Lewes, South Park, Faversham Town and Phoenix Sports taking maximum points away from Woodstock Park this season.

Sittingbourne - VCD Athletic: Over 0.5 Team Goals Scored

Its been quite the season for very different reasons for both sides since they last met, which happened to be the opening day at Culver Road in early August. With Horsham suffering early season jitters, The Brickies raced into a 0-2 lead within twenty minutes, and while Chris Smith managed to pull one back for The Hornets, Sittingbourne held on to secure a 1-2 win and their first points of the season. A win for Sittingbourne would mean The Brickies would be one of only two clubs to perform a league double over us should they overcome Di Paolas side.

Our hosts this weekend have endured a tough league campaign, and have lost their last three games in a row including a 1-2 loss at struggling Greenwich Borough last weekend. The Hornets returned to winning ways last weekend with a routine 3-1 home win at Culver Road against fellow Kent side Sevenoaks Town last weekend, but it is Saturdays opponents who sit a place below them, in fourteenth with both sides needing the points for very different reasons. It is a return to more poor form that the Kent side had thought they were over, after they picked up five out of six wins during February and March.

Just six players remain from the Horsham squad that took on the Brickies that day, while nine of the squad that travelled to VCD a week ago featured in that big win including four of their five goalscorers. There is extra incentive for the Hornets to change that record tomorrow, though, for not only would it lift us above our Kent opponents but it would also go some way towards erasing the memories of Sittingbournes 5-1 win at Culver Road back in September a result that remains our heaviest in the league this season. Our own record at the many grounds occupied by Sittingbourne in the past three decades or so is a poor one, with the 3-0 FA Cup 1st qualifying round success at the capacious old Central Park ground in 2000 the only occasion we have enjoyed the thrill of victory in seven visits.

It was really disappointing. We had some chances and could have had a point from playing badly and we didnt take them. Thankfully, such defeats now seem to have been confined to the history books and an improved run of form has taken the Hornets away from the nether regions of the table to such an extent that, had we reversed last Saturdays 2-1 home loss to Herne Bay, the side would currently be sitting in ninth place. We switched off for ten minutes, let in two bad goals and came away with nothing; thats all you ever get in this league if you arent at your best. We played well after they went 2-0 up but before they scored we gave the ball away six times under no pressure. Reflecting on that defeat, that ended our three match winning run, a frustrated Di Paolatold the West Sussex County TimesI dont think we played particularly well. It isnt good enough; forcing the play and giving the ball away.

Charlie is the sort of player I feel we should be looking to build teams around in the future said Di Paola, despite revealing that he would not be seeking an extension to the month-long loan. I dont feel we have much chance of getting Charlie back again, at least not straight away, as Eastbourne are going through a bit of a rough spell at the moment and have a few injuries so I expect him to go straight back into the squad. The Hornets will make one enforced change for this match, with Charlie Harris returning to parent club Eastbourne Borough after an eventful loan spell in which he both scored and kept goal in the New Years Day victory over Lewes as well as impressing in the wins against VCD Athletic and Whyteleafe.

Last season, Whitstable, who finished 12th, won both fixtures 2-1 against Sittingbourne, who finished 6 points behind in 16th place. Sittingbourne are the first opposition in the newly named BetVictor Isthmian League South East Division, when they make the short trip to the Belmont Ground. As is often the case in this league, there have been a number of player movements at both clubs during the summer. So, after a tough pre-season programme consisting of eight matches that ended with a record of 3 wins, 1 draw and 4 defeats (all against BetVictor Isthmian Premier Division teams), the real action starts today.
